Phoenix21 viert de 1ste metaalfabriek in Vlaanderen, 1821

Fri 1 January 2021 > Sun 31 December 2023

We hebben een aanvraag voor Wijkbudget. Zie https://participatie.stad.gent/nl-BE/ideas/phoenix-21

For English, scroll down.)

1. Phoenix21 | Samen onder 1 Vlag

Zomer 2022

  1. All together under the same flag

We dream of seeing a neighborhood flag fly on a flag pole on the Bargiebrug, the bridge that forms the connection between the neighborhood and the city center. Taking into account the major renovation work on the quays already planned, we will first opt for a mobile mast. A first model of the flag is already in development. This flag can be changed periodically.

Additional flags may be flown along the Bargiebrug-Phoenixstraat-Seghersplein axis.

2. Phoenix Historic Site Tour

The managers of the MIG garage. are committed to opening the site to our artistic project. Several ideas are under development. In addition, an artistic circuit will link the surrounding streets (shop windows, art-deco facades and facades draped with flags) by a network of node points. The tour will culminate with a work of art exhibited on the tower of Saint John the Baptist Church.

3. A monument in the Brugse Poort on Emilius Seghers Square Do you also dream of our own works of art or our own fountain on Seghersplein? We certainly do, together with the organization ‘De Nieuwe Clients’. They have years of experience accompanying residents and neighborhoods from mission to creation. The idea is a monument based on the DNA of the neighborhood. We dream of a sculpture that refers to the past of metal or textiles and the Phoenix as a symbol of life. We dream of a job in the green or in the water. We dream of an oasis for different communities

The basic idea is that it is a work based on the neighborhood of the past and the present. Ideally, we are looking for a concept in which the water can cool off during heatwaves. We also dream of references to the metal and / or textile industry and the Phoenix.

Short and long term goals.

  1. There is a desire among the residents of the Brugse Poort district to meet more and get to know each other better, beyond all borders and differences: religion, origin, sexual orientation, sex, social status or even political beliefs. Discussing, collaborating and carrying out a project together is a way of living together. David vzw, founded in 2007, has the statutory objective of pursuing the healing effects of the aesthetic and artistic experience in various and varied ways. Art has the power to inspire entire communities and to anchor itself in social life. In art, inclusion and diversity are self-evident.
  2. The district will be able to enhance itself through its creative potential. The negative image of the Brugse Poort is depressing, although there are many positive things to highlight.

Confirmed partners

  1. The enthusiasm of local residents, traders and socio-artistic organizations including vzw Magische Stem, Dansende Harten, Maneuver, Voem and Averroes has already made us happy. In addition, Brede School is considered as a partner for the coloring contest. KU Leuven Technologiecampus Gent (Odisee) and the Textile Department of Luca School of Arts are requesting opportunities to show student work.
  2. The idea for a pole with a gigantic flag came about in collaboration with the international art platform 019.

What to expect from the city

It’s possible that not all the different tracks of the project qualify for the “neighborhood budget”. We are awaiting feedback from ‘Wijkregisseurs’ in order to better visualize the options.

For the foundation of the platform, for reflection on the arts in the neighborhood, we are waiting for the city to assume a role of support and mediating.

In conclusion: it would be great to realize Phoenix21 in 2021, because a bicentenary is worth celebrating! After covid-19, the Phoenix21?
